A new approach for steroids

We’ve all heard about the bodybuilders fleeing from Belgian drug testers by now. See this article if you haven’t.

So is this going to become frequent? Are drug testers going to randomly show up at bodybuilding events to fine and prosecute our favourite athletes? Sounds like the Belgian government is just playing bully. It’s like setting up a speed camera on a race track and charging the drivers with speeding!

Perhaps it’s time to seriously re-evaluate the rules on steroids. I for one, would like to see sporting events stated as steroid or non-steroid events. Steroid users should not be fined, but simply not permitted to compete in drug free events. Doesn’t that make logical sense?

I can see one decent theory the government has for the reason to illegalize steroids. If sporting events were required to do the testing themselves, chances are they wouldn’t bother. The government is the only one that really would be willing to do the testing, and to afford to employ drug testers they need to be making some money from it. That’s why using steroids imposes fines.

So taking that into consideration, if we are to convince the governments of the world to legalize steroids, we need to convince them that employing drug testers is an expense they need to justify some how other than by collecting fines.

Supplement Crack Down

Fitness supplements are starting to get a bad rep from the media after Hydroxycut was taken from the shelves a short while ago. But is this going to have any effect on the public perception of taking supplements? This excerpt is from the LA Times in an article titled, “Here’s what’s in those weight-loss supplements“…

“The labels rarely clarify the contents. Where details and dosages are provided at all, they are frequently presented as a bewildering mix of Latin plant names, trademarked monikers for a company’s own mix of ingredients and, often, invented words that sound scientific but mean nothing to chemists or pharmacologists. Hydroxycut’s “Hardcore,” for instance, touts its “norepidrol intensity focus blend” as an aid to focus and attention. Another supplement, TheraStress, declares that its active compound of “adaptogens” helps fight weight gain brought on by stress.
For consumers seeking full disclosure, these labels may as well declare the product is made of genuine atoms.”

Yes, it’s those good old fancy names we all love to see on those supplement bottles. But to be honest, they ARE a major concern to myself and a lot of people who like to know what they’re putting in their body. The same goes with other foods that don’t accurately describe what’s in the product. But as usual, as long as supplement manufacturers keep making up these silly names and hiding the real ingredients, they will continue to take the bad rap for it.

If worse comes to worst, fitness supplements will join steroids and marijuana on the second tier drug chart. Afterall, if steroids were banned for being considered cheating, what makes supplements not cheating as well? Is cheating on a small level permitted?

Dubai to host an IFBB 2010 Olympia Qualifier

“An IFBB PRO sanctioned competition that will open the doors for potential bodybuilders from the Middle East. It’s an experience, which step towards competing for Mr. Olympia competitions. The competition will be open to all IFBB PRO athletes interested in competing and finally be rewarded. As a competitor, expect an exciting and competitive event that may give you once in a life time experience.

This will be the IFBB qualifying event that will secure the Top three (3) finalists to secure a spot to compete for the upcoming 2010 Mr. Olympia in Las Vegas, Nevada USA. This particular event will also be graced by well known Olympians such as Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Dexter Jackson, Victor Martinez and Phil Heath.”

The event is a week after the 2009 Olympia and may be a pretty smart move toward spreading the sport of bodybuilding to the middle east. Though there is one concern. Will there be a female contest? Seems like the female bodybuilders are getting a bit angry about the lack of attention to their sport lately and this is just another case where they wont be welcome.

One thing to note is that some cities are not built with fitness in mind and this is definitely going to affect how active people are. So it’d definitely be wise to inform your town or city of this, and make sure they’re taking our fitness into consideration when they develop new areas or renovate existing roads and paths.

Focus On The Bigger Picture

The fitness industry tends to evolve around secrets, tricks and techniques lately.

Discussions around popular forums are always about the precise changes to a movement that may make a difference in results, such as the angle of the bench, the way you grip the bar, the way you breath and what you drink during your workout.

Unfortunately this is leading everyone astray!

As a result, consumers in the fitness industry tend to develop a mindset that it’s the little tricks and techniques that matter. They think the reason they are not seeing results is because they have the bench 10 degrees off what is recommended, or they’re drinking 10 ounces too much water before exercise. They’re neglecting what really matters!

Now this may be good for fitness product marketers, because if people are interested in the tricks and tips, the marketers are going to make a fortune off it, but if you’re really, genuinely interested in helping people achieve their fitness goals, you need to set them straight before they get sucked into this terribly misguided industry!

Teach people about the BIGGER PICTURE!

Here at The Fit News, we would like to see a change in the way fitness products are promoted. We want to see authors go back to the basics and start teaching what really matters. They need to clear up the clutter in the newcomer’s mind, and get them on a steady track that WILL see results, not one that relies on tricks, supplements, and how much money you pay the trainer.

The “tricks” should actually be THE BASICS, not the advanced techniques. Lifting and eating more is how you grow. Exercise and eating less is how you lose weight. The newcomers need to have this drilled into their memory before they move onto anything else.

This would have to be the best piece of advice you could give a new person in the fitness industry:

“If you focus on the basics you will make gains. If you focus on the tips and tricks, you will barely achieve anything.”

Thanks to JC at JCD Fitness for inspiring this post. When asked how he gained such huge legs and the specifics of which exercises he used, he simply stated:legs

“Big legs = the right movements + food + time + sanity in your workouts. All you need to do is progress on a solid compound movement, eat enough to grow, understand that it takes time to develop and always train in a sensible manner. I built the size in my legs by doing lots of squats and leg presses. During my athletic years, squats were our main lower movements with variations of deadlifts thrown in as well.”

“In my opinion taking a minimalistic approach is almost always best. I say almost because that isn’t going to be true for every single trainee. However for the majority of those out there caught up in all the fitness/bodybuilding craziness, we sometimes get hung up on all the small things.”

Asking these questions is not a waste of time as we all have to learn but dwelling on them is a waste of mental energy. There is no need to spend time worrying about stuff that does not make a lick of difference. Every time I begin working with someone new, I always emphasize the bigger picture. The bigger picture, to me, is choosing a solid training program with compound movements, focusing on calorie totals including protein, EFA requirements and pushing minutiae to the wayside.

When you finally grasp the bigger picture, you experience complete freedom. You become less worried about the small things such as meal timing, nailing the exact macro nutrients, dining out, the perfect workout program etc.

Once you reach this place, fitness becomes easy. I don’t mean easy in the sense that you no longer have to put in the work to look great in your birthday suit, but you will definitely alleviate the stress and worry we sometimes experience regarding our training/diet regimen.

Jim Smith from Diesel Crew releases AMD

accelerated-muscular-developmentJim Smith’s latest product has just hit the e-shelves today. AMD, which is short for Accelerated Muscular Development, is now available for purchase and he’s been building up some serious hype about this product.

We’ve headed over to the official AMD website to see what he has on offer.

“This Exclusive Muscle Building System is Only Intended for Those Who Are Finally Ready to Achieve Their Goals of Getting Absolutely Ripped and Strong as Hell…RIGHT NOW!”

“Who Else is Ready To Get Jacked and Add 16 lbs of Ripped Muscle While Rapidly Dropping Ugly Belly Fat with 3 Short, Intense and Highly Effective Workouts a Week?”

The AMD sales page takes a very familiar approach, with lots of bold red font, yellow highlighting and dashed boxes with extra offers everywhere the eye can see. It looks like he’s throwing a lot of effort into this system and is expecting to make some large returns on it.

Worthy of a mention is the testimonials on his landing page, coming from some highly respected fitness gurus in the industry.

“This program is creative, innovative and most importantly beneficial to those who seek greater strength and power.” – Ross Enamait

Overall it looks pretty typical of a sales landing page today. There’s plenty of before/after photos, lots of major claims, a bundle of testimonials and free product offers, and a video which shows a bunch of average looking guys doing some unusual strength exercises. The video is definitely a weak point to the landing page, though the rest of it makes up pretty well.

So while there doesn’t seem to be anything new and exciting in this new program, it does look quite thorough, especially with all the extra e-books he’s throwing in. Anyone new to fitness or struggling at low levels would greatly benefit from it, though it doesn’t appear as though there’s much targeted at intermediates or advanced fitness people.

Included in product purchase are:

  • Accelerated Muscular Development
  • The Combat Core Master Manual
  • Accelerated Corrective Strategies
  • Mass Building Meal Plans
  • Introduction to Odd Object Training
  • Free Bonus #1: Deadlift Fundamentals Manual
  • Free Bonus #2: Deadlift Fundamentals Instructional Video
  • Free Bonus #3: AMD Fat Loss Strategies
  • Free Bonus #4: AMD Insane Upper Body Training Session
  • Free Bonus #5: AMD Insane Lower Body Training Session
  • Premier Bonus #1: Strength Coach Interrogations
  • Premier Bonus #2: Explosive Med Ball Training
  • Premier Bonus #3: Exlusive Two Part FitCast.com Interview with Mike Robertson, MA, CSCS.
  • Premier Bonus #4: Special ZHealth Report from Mike T. Nelson, MS, PhD Candidate:

We’ll post your reviews if we get any. Once again, the sales page is here.

Ronnie Coleman Arrested

Big Ronnie has been arrested for attempting to avoid a speeding ticket by telling the police officer on duty that he was still a police officer himself. Unfortunately it didn’t work, and now he faces the penalty from impersonating a police officer. He’s since been released on bail and I’m sure we’ll hear more about the specifics of the charges soon. Busting The Useless Fitness Products

Don’t you just love those fitness product infomercials that air on TV around about lunch time every day? Now when I say “love”, I am of course being sarcastic, but they do provide some quality humour for those of us in the know about how fitness actually works!

Unfortunately though, there are people actually getting sucked into these gimmick products! And I don’t know about you, but I can’t help feeling as though innocent people are being lied to and ripped off by these gimmicks and I think we have to do something about it.

Well, I have good news. Someone is already doing something about it. His name is Scooby, and if you haven’t heard of Scooby yet, head on over to www.scoobysworkshop.com to meet one of the most popular fitness gurus on Youtube.

What we’ve discovered today is that Scooby has a feature part of his website called “Hall of Shame”, where he provides a quick summary and verdict of popular fitness products and rates them with his questionably accurate thumbs down system.

To give you an idea of how he rates them, here is his rating system copy pasted from his site:

A waste of space, money, and the planets resources. Probably works but there are very inexpensive alternatives which are better.
Basic lies and bullsh*t. Unsubstantiated claims.
Complete and total steaming bullsh*t! Probably dangerous.

Currently Scooby has only reviewed 13 products, but I think he’s onto a good start. If you’ve used some fitness equipment that does not do what the marketing says and you’d like people to know about it, Scooby would like to hear about it. You can find his contact details on the Hall of Shame page on Scooby’s Workshop.

Top 5 Fitness Blogs

With the number of blogs already exceeding 100 million around the world, there is no doubt going to be a myriad of choices when it comes to the popular topic of fitness.

Fortunately for you, The Fit News has decided to track down the very best fitness blogs so that you don’t have to spend a millennium doing the searching yourself!

This list is going to be based on a few factors which we deem to be the most important when it comes to choosing a quality fitness blog to subscribe to.

Those are:

Unique Content- We don’t want to read the same thing over and over again. A quality fitness blog must provide us with enough unique content to not sound like a broken record.

Frequent Posts - Have you subscribed to a blog that updates once a month? It’s easy to forget that they even exist! One post per week is a minimum for our list.

Unbiased AdviceWe all know a sales page when we see one. If every post is selling a product, you can guarantee they’re only in it for the money!

Proven AdviceWould you take advice from someone who is less successful than you in their fitness goals? Neither would we. The author of a decent fitness blog must be able to walk the walk as well as they talk the talk.

So now that you know our criteria, it’s time to track down our Top Fitness Blogs! And please note that this list will not be permanent. As we discover new blogs and as new blogs start up, we will add them to the list if they deem themselves worthy. Likewise, current blogs will be removed if they fail to maintain the standards we have set as our criteria.

JCD Fitness www.jcdfitness.com

Your no BS guide to looking great naked.

JCD Fitness is our number one fitness blog at the present time and the reasons are quite obvious. The first thing you notice when visiting JCD Fitness is the simple structured layout of his website. It’s very easy to read and it gets straight to the point. Straight away we can tell that JCDFitness is a worthy fitness blog so let’s put it through our criteria and see how it goes.

Unique Content: A quick look at the front page reveals none of the usual stuff you see on a fitness website. This is a good thing, because the usual stuff on every other fitness website is the same thing we’ve been reading for years! JCD Fitness has obviously acknowledged this and seems to be taking a different approach to his post topics. Despite the fact that the good old advice is still there hidden under the categories, the focus of his website’s recent updates seem to be on providing people with information that they are unlikely to find elsewhere. In fact, the information doesn’t seem to be catered to anyone in particular, it’s very well rounded and although some of it may not relate to you right now, it is definitely valuable information to anyone none the less. Speaking of originality, look at the blog titles!

Frequent Posts: Google Reader claims that JCDFitness is updated an average of 2.1 times per week, which is definitely a reasonable amount for a fitness blog.

Unbiased Advice: Since JCDFitness does not appear to be selling any products, we can guarantee that his advice is genuine and unbiased. After reading many of his posts you can tell that he is writing purely from experience, and not a text book like some.

Proven Advice: JC’s advice appear to be based purely on experience, and one look at his photos on the about page proves that what he’s writing about is definitely working for him.

Conclusion: JCD Fitness is definitely a highly recommended fitness blog for anyone interested in learning all aspects of fitness. The twice a week posts will not flood your inbox and his pleasant writing style combined with original, yet very useful content, will be sure to keep your eyes on the screen for any length of time he desires.

Fitness Black Book www.fitnessblackbook.com

Advanced tips your personal trainer doesn’t know about.

Fitness Black Book is a fitness blog all about muscle strength and toning. And those two subjects it covers very well. The first thing you notice when visiting Fitness Black Book is the simplistic design of the website. It looks as though someone whipped it up in 5 minutes using Dreamweaver, but don’t let this fool you, for the content on this website is very useful. But, how does it shape up in our criteria?

Unique Content: Fitness Black Book’s claim to fame is the website slogan. “Advanced tips your personal trainer doesn’t know about.” Surprisingly, it actually delivers! Much of the content is exactly as you’d expect – tips that your average trainer wont tell you! Now although the post topics have a familiar feel to them, and the usual content is still there for those who are new to the fitness world, Fitness Black Book takes it a step further and teaches you tips and tricks that you generally don’t hear anywhere else. Whether it’s because most authors are forgetful or they don’t even know this knowledge, who knows, but what matters is that by following Fitness Black Book you wont miss out on them!

Frequent Posts: Fitness Black Book is updated 2.1 times per week according to Google Reader, and that definitely qualifies for a useful fitness blog.

Unbiased Advice: Although Fitness Black Books does sell affiliate products, they are unrelated to his blog posts. The information inside his blog posts appears to be unbiased.

Proven Advice: Rusty Moore is the man behind Fitness Black Book and judging by his about page photo,  he practices what he preaches.

Conclusion: Fitness Black Book is strongly recommended as a fitness blog to follow for all levels of expertise in fitness. Even if you’re a seasoned pro, you will probably read something new and interesting in almost every blog post.

Gym Junkies www.gymjunkies.com

Hardcore Fitness Training.

Gym Junkies is a blog aimed at weight lifting advice for gym users. Reading Gym Junkies makes you feel like you’re looking up at a military personal trainer yelling at you to get lifting and get fit. Upon entering the site for the first time you get a feeling that the blog is about underground training secrets – the kind of thing the pro weight lifters all know but wont tell you until you reach their level. But after surfing around for a while you realise that it’s just for average people wanting to lose weight or get fit. The dungeon-like feel is just for motivation and cool-factor!

Unique Content: Gym Junkies does not necessarily have unique content, but they have a unique way of delivering it. They have chosen to do a lot of video posts that tend to teach you a lot more and get you a lot more motivated than plain text. The site is very instructional, making sure that you do not just learn about what they teach, but master it and never have to read about it again.

Frequent Posts: Gym Junkies is posting 2.1 times per week on average. Enough content to stay interested, not too much to flood your inbox.

Unbiased Advice: The advice given on Gym Junkies is mainly from an instructional perspective. While there are affiliate products being offered from links on the main page, the content in each blog post is unrelated to the products and this is a sign that the advice is unbiased.

Proven Advice: What separates Gym Junkies from the rest is their live case studies. The advice is written or viewed as though you’re watching a personal trainer train a client. It’s clear that the advice does work, and it’s just further proven by the author’s photo on the about page. He definitely knows what he’s doing.

Conclusion: Gym Junkies is highly recommended for those who are just getting into the gym. You’ll find exercise tutorials and enough guides to keep you working hard for months. There is not much value for people who are already gym junkies, but if you want to be one, definitely subscribe to GymJunkies.com

Body Recomposition www.bodyrecomposition.com

Lyle McDonald’s personal blog on scientific, fact based information.

Body Recomposition is the home blog of Lyle McDonald, an author with a reputation for a very scientific approach to fitness. He authors a number of weight loss books that you can buy from his website. Upon entering his blog, you’re met with a very neatly layed out design with no clutter and no flashy adverts. The site is very easy to navigate.

Unique Content: Body Recomposition covers very mainstream topics however he takes it a step further by providing more insight into the science behind how something works. For this reason it can still be considered unique.

Frequent Posts: Lyle updates his blog an average of twice a week, which seems to be the norm for all top fitness blogs at the moment.

Unbiased Advice: Lyle does sell his own books from his website, though they are not pushed by any of his blog posts. They are simply there as banner adverts. For this reason, we believe Lyle’s advice is unbiased.

Proven Advice: Body Recomposition has a large following in the forum and many testimonials to prove that what Lyle says works. However, it is noted that what his blog posts are about is very common knowledge, with an extra bit of science and explanation. What he’s providing you is extra tips and explanations on why something works, not how to do it.

Conclusion: Body Recomposition is recommended for experienced fitness people. If you want to dig deeper into the science behind certain facts and theories in the fitness undustry, Lyle is very good at explaining it thoroughly and making it clear.

To be continued…

Unfortunately this list can only include 4 fitness blogs at the present time. That’s not because there’s only 4 of them in existance, but these are the only fitness blogs we have come across so far that deserve to be in this list. If you know of a really good fitness blog that has unique, frequent, unbiased and proven content, feel free to list it below in the comments and we’ll put it to the test.

Remember, this list is not permanent. It will be ever-changing, just like the fitness industry. As new fitness blogs appear we will put them through the tests, and as these ones degrade, so will their ranking. For now, if you’re interested in learning more about fitness and keeping up to date with the fitness industry, visit and subscribe to these fitness blogs and you’ll have 10 original, unbiased and high quality articles to read each week. That’s more than enough to keep you in the mix!
