Is The Recession Causing Obesity?

obeseAccording to a “study”, over the last year the number of obese Americans has increased by 1.7 percent. That is apparently 5.5 million more obese people in the country. Who’s to blame for this? Well, apparently the recession!

Without as much money, people can’t afford to buy healthy foods. And we all know how expensive steak, fruit and veges are these days!

But on the otherhand, is it likely that people who eat steak, fruit and veges are going to go back to their junk food, or are they just going to eat less of the healthy food?

Stop Rushing Into New Fitness Routines!

I see it all too often!

People jumping into a new diet or routine headfirst, only to realise 2 days later that they can’t physically or mentally keep it up. They end up disappointed and unmotivated so they give up altogether!

People tend to think that losing weight is something you do in phases. Sure, for bodybuilders it is, but if you just want to lose weight for summer and you haven’t done it before, the last thing you want to do is go all in and change your diet in one day, start a brand new training regime that morning and burn yourself out after 2 days!

You need to build yourself up for this kind of goal. It has to be gradual.

Instead of going cold turkey on all your junk food, just take a piece of junk food out every week.

Instead of planning to run 5 miles every morning starting from tomorrow, plan to run 1 mile every second day and if it feels good, start doing more until you reach 5 miles every morning.

Your initial goal should not be written as:

To lose 30 pounds and run 10km before summer.

It should be more like:

To achieve a diet and training regime that will achieve persistent weight loss results.

As we all know, everyone’s different, and that means you have to create your own diet and training routine through trial and error. So don’t expect to just jump straight into a prescribed diet and routine and have it run smoothly. You’re ALWAYS going to have to change things around, drop exercises you don’t like an add ones that you do like. So why not start slow and gradually build up your diet and training routine from scratch?

Learn as you go and make sure you improve every week. In the long run you will be MUCH better off.

Has anyone got any thoughts on this?

Microsoft Xbox wants in on Wii’s fitness success

Microsoft has just announced a new feature for their Xbox console, titled, “Project Natal”.

Project Natal is a video camera that detects human movement and allows the player to control the character on screen by performing real life movements in front of the TV.

This cannot be good news for the Wii, which is limited to what you can do on a small platform with pressure sensors. Xbox is well known for having the best graphics in the console industry, and with the mega potential of this hardware, it’s not going to be long before every fitness game has moved from the Wii and over to the Xbox.

Here’s the video that’s been floating around Youtube, though it really doesn’t do the technology justice. It comes off a bit corny to be honest!

The key to living long is exercising and socializing says 92 year old Eva Melanson

92womanEva Melanson is 92 years old and hits the gym 5 times a week. The average age limit in the western world today is around 75, so she’s definitely achieved something great here.

So what’s her secret? Well, she claims that it’s regular exercise and socialising! Perhaps this can inspire a new type of gym aimed more at socialising than getting serious with your weights. With the baby boomers gradually reaching senior age, there’s definitely a market there!

What’s the bet Starbucks starts showing up next door to popular gyms?

Health & Fitness Day. August 1st

The city of Los Angeles has announced that August 1st will be the official Health and Fitness day from now on.

The idea was thought of by Michael Torchia, a personal trainer who apparently trains many celebrities. He believes we all need a national day to think about and work on our health and fitness issues. But is it really worth it? We already have a “walk to work day” in Australia, on which the fit people walk to work and the unfit people stick to their cars.  It doesn’t exactly work here! But regardless of whether it’s effective or not, it’s still some what of an effort to make a change. Congratulations to Michael Torchia for convincing the local government to take action.

Annual Online Bikini Search by Flexonline.com

What a fantastic day for all men who like fit women! Flex Magazine is currently holding their annual online bikini model contest and you’re all welcome to head on over to http://www.flexonline.com/flexmodelsearch/vote/ and take your pick!

Not surprisingly, there’s more silicone than muscle in this bunch. And unfortunately, only half of them HAVE any muscle!

Here’s a break down of the selection:

  • Svitlana M looks like she’s 9 years old. (Well that’s a great start… how about some fitness models?)
  • Shawna W has a bit of a Cameron Diaz look going on there. Very nice face.
  • Kirsty C hasn’t got an ounce of muscle on her. Why Flex accepted her entry beats me!
  • Vanessa R could pass for Celine Dion.
  • Heather V has relied on her implants to get her this far.
  • Marion has definitely hit the gym a few times. Nice body!
  • Autumn E is a must see, but looks like 2 different people in her photos.
  • Linsday N needs to lift more than the 500gram dumbbells if she wants to qualify for a fitness model.
  • Gabriela C pulls a nice Uma Thurman look in one of the photos.
  • Louise G is hoping she can hide her lack of muscles behind her implants.
  • Rebecca B didn’t realise it was a fitness model competition.
  • Megan L is a must see for red hair fanatics.
  • Carnella B is more interested in having sex with her photographer than winning a bikini contest.
  • Nicky P is hhhhhhhhot! Check this one out for sure!
  • Zaneta K needs a new photographer. Nice body in one photo.
  • Suzanna A is still in bulking season but looks great!

AND THE WINNER IS!!!

Nicky P.

I’m pretty disappointed that ChickenTuna wasn’t in it. I guess Bodybuilding.com have already snatched her up though.

They don’t come much better than this, ladies and gentleman. Here she is:

Enough About Creatine!

EVERYONE is going on about creatine lately. Come on guys… creatine is old news. We all know it works so there’s no need to keep making up studies to further prove it!

I’d like to see some studies about which supplements DON’T WORK!

Target these new “anabolic” products. In fact, anything with anabolic in the name that doesn’t call itself a testosterone booster needs to be tested.

I tried a Cissus product by USP Labs and felt absolutely nothing at all. Yet people I know have claimed their other products containing cissus DO work.

The Evolution of Fat Loss

Fitness Black Book interviewed a man named Brad Pilon today and posted something very important which I think everyone should consider.

Over the last few decades we’ve seen a range of different diet ideas become very popular. You could say we are currently in the low carb era, where people believe eating low carbs is the key to losing body fat.

While this DOES work, you must remember that many years ago, people believed that low fat was the key to losing fat. And that ALSO worked. In between these periods there has been many other fads such as starving yourself altogether and alternating carbohydrate consumption every day, all of which have still achieved the goal of fat loss.

So if they all work, why does the popular mainstream belief of what works keep changing?

Well if you’re a person who has already achieved your fitness goals, you know very well that it is actually calories in versus calories out that matters, not these little tips and tricks that you read in niche diet books.

But why doesn’t the public realise this? Well perhaps it’s in the way we teach them about calories in versus calories out.

We generally tell people that it’s about how many calories you eat in one day, versus the calories you burn in one day. We’re teaching them to think in periods of 24 hours.

Now what if we were to teach people to think in terms of 7 days. What if they knew that their ability to lose weight was dependent on a 7 day calorie deficit, not a 1 day calorie deficit?

There are many benefits to thinking this way, but most importantly, the ability to plan well ahead of time.

We all know how hard it can be to organise meals a few hours in advance, especially when something comes up at work or you run out of a certain food that was required for your meal that night.

If people had 2 or 3 days to plan in advance, organising what you eat would be so much easier! Knowing what you can and can’t eat would be easier too! You’d have time to really work these things out.

Perhaps this is something you can teach people about next time someones asks how to lose weight.

If you’d like to know more about Brad Pilon’s own diet program, check out Eat Stop Eat. WARNING: Lots of writing, but the gist of what his diet is about can be found in the first 2 sales pages.

Diet of the week TO AVOID

redbullThe Red Bull Diet.

Popularised by a New Zealand woman drinking 10 cans of Red Bull per day, as well as eating cereal, to result in 98 pounds of fat loss in eight months.

How this diet worked, god knows! But she did it, and then suffered the consequences by having a heart attack…

Fortunately(?) she survived. And I’m sure she’ll be going back to the recommendation of “no more than  2 cans per day” from now on.

Speaking of Red Bull, do you drink it, and why?

I personally do, and I’ve found that a small red bull before a workout or a run increases my energy. The drink is of course a caffeinated sugar drink, which would make sense, but other soft drinks don’t seem to have the same effect.
